Glow Lanterns to make a bang this Diwali!

Diwali, the annual festival of lights will be celebrated with gusto and pride throughout the country this month. The annual festival will begin in traditional fashion with the burning of the effigies of the mythical demon Narkasur, signifying victory over good and evil. This will inevitably be followed by the objects that Diwali has become famous for: crackers, sweets, diyas and rangolis!

You wouldn’t be mistaken if you happened to spot something novel in the midst of all the fanfare though. That’s right, this year will see Glow Lanterns continue to make their mark in the festivities nationwide. A far cry from the loud counterparts that have been a staple for many Diwalis past and present, their regal charm has enchanted a lot of households as they take flight and light up the skies above.

It particularly appeals to households and families who have a healthy appetite for smokeless and noiseless ‘firecrackers’. Glow Lanterns being on the cheaper end of the scale compared to the quintessential firecracker also made it a wonderful addition to the urban shopping basket.

These Glow Lanterns – as most of you already know – also pack in a visual treat and make for photographic opportunities galore. With minimal fuss from beginning to end, they also prove completely safe for children.

Many would say this is the mere beginning! As folks are now aware of the ill-effects of noise and air pollution, they may want to stray away from conventional firecrackers. Though they still want to enjoy and have a blast (figuratively speaking!) during this festival of the ages – which is where a dozen or so Glow Lanterns help out in kind!

China and the Glow Lanterns

If there is one civilization that can lay claim to the invention of the modern day Glow Lantern, it is the Chinese. According to the sinologist and historian of science Joseph Needham, the Chinese experimented with small hot air balloons for signaling from as early as the 3rd century BC, during the Warring States period.

raditionally, however, their invention is attributed to the sage and military strategist Zhuge Liang (181–234 AD)[1] whose reverent term of address was Kongming. He is said to have used a message written on a Glow Lantern to summon help on an occasion when he was surrounded by enemy troops. For this reason they are still known in China as Kongming lanterns

In ancient China, Glow Lanterns were strategically used in wars. However later on, non-military applications were employed as they became popular with children at festivals. These lanterns were subsequently incorporated into festivals like the Chinese Mid-Autumn and Lantern Festivals, which are still popular to this day.

Of course, it didn’t take too long for the art to spread its wings around the globe, and today even you and I can fire up one of these delightful specks of fire and light at will. When are you having a go next? 🙂

The New Year Glow Lantern Tradition

A group of Bernalites will be making Glow Lanterns from biodegradable rice paper and then launching them from atop Bernal Hill ini California at midnight in a few days time. They’ll decorate the lanterns with art, hopes, fears, resolutions, dreams, and dares and head up the hill at around 11 on the night of New Year’s eve and cast their balloons afloat, keeping them anchored with twine.

And they’re not alone! If there is any one particular event that Glow Lanterns have become synonymous with, it is the New Year. Cutting across all global faultlines, a sea of lanterns heading upwards from a particular town can only mean one thing: there comes the New Year there and then!

And where did this all begin? Years ago in Taiwan, when folks released as many as 1600 Glow Lanterns at the Pingsi International Sky Lantern Festival to celebrate that edition of the Chinese lunar New Year.

Like wildfire, the practice caught on and the rest of the world took note with keen eyes. Australia? Malaysia? Europe? You name it, they all have caught on in the first decade of this century. A neat practice in Japan in particular is to put out as many lanterns as the year being welcomed in. For instance, this New Year’s eve will see two thousand and sixteen lanterns flare up into the heavens.

And considering Japan is typically the first country to witness any given New Year, brace yourself for some visual delights in the week coming up!

Why not take a leaf out of these books and send up a Glow Lantern or two yourself? Be with yourself – your thoughts and make the most of it. Go to a beautiful, quiet place – a place that gives you solace and makes you happy. Take some Glow lanterns and leave them in the air – making a wish with each one!

Glow Lanterns in the USofA!

As is typically the case with sport, cinema and music, you really haven’t struck big until you have decisively penetrated the American market of the time. Such is the allure of popularity and fame in that part of the world, that Glow Lanterns are hardly the last ones to be left behind.

The ancient festival from Asia was recently transplanted as a “for profit” venture in America– and aptly titled the Lantern Festival. While the lantern festivals in pursuit of good fortune are celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month in most Asian cultures, it seems to have brought good fortune in America to a company that has turned the ‘Lantern Fest’ into a touring phenomenon.

Instead of Indy cars that once sped around the track, Pikes Peak International Raceway south of Colorado Springs was filled with thousands of people gathered to gaze in awe at lights on the night of November 7.

Each person at the event was given a single Glow Lantern and the ingredients to flare them up. Families and friends gathered around campfires roasting marshmallows, eating sandwiches and listening to music from the stage waiting for the sky to grow dark.

Then the lanterns came out. Using a tiki torch, each group would fill their lantern with hot air, and consequently watch it glide into the pitch black sky.

Together, the crowd gathered counted down the final seconds. Then the lanterns were launched in a kind of slow motion orchestra that turned the night sky into what looked like a man made Milky Way, cranking up the stock of Glow Lanterns in the North American continent while they were at it!

Glow Lanterns in the Halloween!

Lighting up an orange Glow Lantern is great fun in the best of times isn’t it? How about during a festival that is seemingly tailor-made for the occasion? We are referring to Halloween of course, where the Glow Lanterns in question can play act their way into being pumpkins with a spooky face on them – all in the spirit of the season!

Like every other Glow Lantern you may have lit, these have a small fuel source in the middle that, once lit, will lift the lantern slowly into the sky with an orange glow – bar the caricature of the face on the pumpkin of course. These Halloween lanterns are made with fire-retardant, 100% biodegradable material lending them to their eco-friendly best as always.

It’s hard to pinpoint when somebody made the obvious connection, but the practice has caught on in the United States and Canada before morphing towards Asia in recent years, ironically in reverse to the proliferation of the Glow Lantern in the first place. The versatility of these rice-papered marvels lend themselves heartily to the occasion, and give the conventional Jack-o’-Lanterns a good run for their money.

In India itself, certain Christian pockets on the Malabar coast do partake to this new, hip trend. Don’t be surprised to spot a whole stack of lanterns, a black marker and a piece of string on your next road-trip to that quaint Goa cafe. These are ingredients to some spectacular dollops in the sky come the end of October each year!

To sum it up then, a Glow Lantern or ten would be perfect to use at your Halloween party coming up this weekend. Just picture a group of your friends lighting these together and sending them off into the sky. You would look up and see these crafty orange specks lighting up the night sky and stand a chance to win Neighbor of the Year for sure!
